The meanings of colours

Hand tying

Here you have the perfect opportunity to really personalise your ceremony when you are selecting the materials and colours for your hand tying ribbons and cords. You can have cords that have either several colours twisted into one cord and used for a single cord ceremony, or each colour can be draped individually over your hands. For more than two or three colours, ribbon usually works better than cord or rope. Each of the ribbon colours has their own special symbolic meaning.

Different coloured hand tying ribbons

You can use as many pieces as you like, but three is the standard so that you can braid the pieces together, which symbolizes your past, present and future lives joining together. If they are to be braided, I recommend you start with lengths of three metres each. A hand tying cord should ideally be between 1.5 and 2 metres in length. This will allow for it to be wrapped around your hands a couple of times and the ends tied together.

White plaited ribbon with Celtic knot charms

You might prefer to have a simple white plaited ribbon which has been beautifully decorated with charms that have a special meaning for you. You might want to include a miniature framed photograph of your children or your pets. Crystals, stars, moon and sun charms add a spiritual feel. Whilst charms representing your heritage or interests, such as a motorbike, guitars or globe can be very personal.
